You start the game off in your house. Retrieve a potion from your PC and head downstairs and out the door. Then try to go out to the field to the north. Oak will stop you and tell you to follow him to his lab. Inside, Gary, your rival, will stop by, also. Oak will tell you to each select one pokemon. You can chose Charmander, the fire pokemon, Squirtle, the water pokemon, or Bulbasaur, the grass pokemon. I recomend starting out with Bulbasaur because he can beat the first two gym leaders easily. Or course, Gary will choose the one that is more powerful than yours. When you try to exit, Gary will chalenge you to a battle! If you beat him, you will get 175 or so dollars. Exit the lab, then head north to Viridian City.
ROUTE 1
On Route 1, you will see some Rattatas and Pidgeys. Fight them for experience, since you can't catch them yet. Try to raise your pokemon a few levels. One boy on Route 1 will give you a potion. Head on to Viridian City.
VIRIDIAN CITY
When you enter Viridian City, head towards the PokeMart and go inside. The guy will give you a special package to give to Oak. Heal your pokemon at the pokecenter for free, then head back to Pallet Town via Route 1.
BACK TO PALLET TOWN
Go to Oaks lab and give him the package. Gary will stop by again, and he will wonder whats going on. Oak will give you each a Pokedex, which will record data about the Pokemon you have caught or seen. After Gary exits, head to his house. Talk to his sister to get a town map. Head back north to Viridian City.
BACK TO VIRIDIAN CITY
Now you can but stuff from the Pokemart. Buy a few pokeballs, and then head west to the pokemon league. go to the first grassy patch you come to and try to catch a pokemon there. Go for a nindoran, because you can't find these until much later in the game. After you've done that, continue west untill you fight Gary. He has a pidgey and whatever he started out with so beat him and he will tell you about the badge system. Go back to the pokemart and buy a few pokeballs and some antidotes. Go north to Route 2.
ROUTE 2
You can catch some pokemon here, nothing that you haven't seen already, except for a weedle in the red version. Go north to the building and go to Viridian Forrest.
VIRIDIAN FORREST
YES!! The first real place to catch a variety of pokemon. YOu can battle a bunch of different trainers here, most of them are bug trainers. Be sure to catch a PIKACHU!!!!!! here. They can evolve into powerful little cute things later on in the game. DO NOT evolve it when you get a thunderstone. Anyway, catch a weedle or a caterpie, or a Kakuna or a Metapod. I caught a pidgeotto once. There is also a pokeball, an antidote, and a potion you can get. You can aviod some trainers, but not all of them. Get through the maze and go north to Pewter City.
PEWTER CITY
This is the site of your first gym match. Brock is the leader, and no, he doesn't come along with you. Before going to the gym, heal your pokemon at the pokecenter and get some potions at the pokemart. Next go to the museum and learn some stuff from there. Now you can go to the gym. There is one other guy in the gym besides Brock, but you can skip him if you want. Brock uses Rock and Ground pokemon, so use water if you have it. If you don't have a water pokemon, use a bug pokemon. They are pretty good against rock. If you have a charmander, its got to be well trained. Brock has a level 12 geodude and a level 14 onix. If you beat brock, you will get a Boulderbadge which allows you to use flash when you get it. He will also give you TM 34, which is Bind. Bind absorbs attack damage and deals it back double to the enemy! When you beat Brock, leave the gym, heal your pokemon, stock up on supplies, and head east to Route 3
ROUTE 3
There are a bunch of trainers here, 7 to be exact, and all will battle you and help your pokemon raise their abilities or levels. You can a pidgey, a spearow, or a jigglypuff here. Jigglypuff are rare pokemon who don't look powerful, but can learn METRONOME! anyway, try to catch one, and at the end of the road, heal your pokemon. In the pokecenter, there's a guy who will want to sell you a pokemon for $500. don't buy it. its a gyp. you can catch the magikarp for free once you get a rod. Head on in to Mount Moon.
MOUNT MOON
Mount Moon is a place where you can catch zubats, geodudes, clefaries, and parases. There are 2 types of trainers in Mount Moon, "Super Nerds" who use electric pokemon, and "Hikers" who use rock and ground pokemon.
When you walk in, go to your left then go up then you will find TM12, a WaterGun. There is an escape rope, a rare candy, and a HP-UP on the first level. Go back to the beggining, go north until you see a passage going west. Follow that passage, then go south past the first trainer to the first stairwell. There is a TM01, RocketPunch guarded by a Rocket. GO back up the stairs and go south when you reach the bottom of the passage, go west again. Go north and there will be a a hiker guarding a moon stone, and a stairwell. Get the moonstone and follow that stairwell. Folow the passage until you reach three rockets. Fight them and then you will see the HELIX FOSSIL and the DOME FOSSIL.
When you try to get one of them, the SuperNerd next to you will fight you. If you beat him, you will get to pick a fossil. If you pick the Helix Fossil, you can get Omanyte, and if you pick the Dome Fossil, you can get Kabuto. Follow the path and exit Mount Moon.
ROUTE 4
Follow the path and head east to Cerulean City. Once you jump the last ledge, you can't get back.
